XaviXPORT

Developer: SSD Company Limited

Year Released: 2004

Generation: 6th

The XaviXport was a unique and innovate console that uses peripherals to interact with onscreen games. The console contained image recognition and infrared sensors that could detect player movements. The multiprocessor in the console was able to translate the actions into onscreen movement. This was the first time a console was dedicated to providing this interactive gaming experience, and the first home video game console that fully utilised and required the use of full, wireless motion sensing controllers. No games were included with the system- game packs, all sports and fitness related, were sold separately and included the game and a specialized controller shaped like the athletic equipment used in the respective game, for example a golf club or tennis racquet.

Many attribute the fall of the XaviX to lack of exposure. SSD’s distribution channels prevented it from ever reaching the type of household recognisability required to give the larger video game firms a legitimate challenge. The few chains that did carry the system and its software library often dealt with no other video game systems or games and were forced to lump the XaviXport into the same category of novelty electronics as handheld puzzle games and electronic indoor gold clubs.

Action film star Jackie Chan partnered up with SSD Company Limited to create new game titles for XaviXport. Two games were released featuring the actor Jackie Chan’s Action Boxing and Jackie Chan’s Action Mat.
