The Magnavox Odyssey

Based on the Brown Box prototype created by Ralph Baer, the Odyssey had no graphic capabilities; as such translucent colour overlays were included to provide settings and game boards. It also came with accessories such as dice, a deck of cards, play money and poker chips.
With fewer than 200,000 units sold, the Odyssey was not a commercial success mostly due to the poor marketing. Many potential consumers were under the impression that the Odyssey would only work on Magnavox televisions sets which was untrue. Despite these setbacks, the Magnavox Odyssey and its inventor Ralph Baer paved the way for all video game systems to come and ultimately started the video game console industry
